Anne Madelain

Anne Madelain is a Lecturer in History and Civilization of the Contemporary Balkans at the European Department of INALCO (National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations). She serves as the Master's referent for the Europe department and teaches in the Master's program in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus at the University of Geneva's Global Studies Institute. Her PhD in History was awarded by the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in 2015, focusing on French-Balkan relations during the 1990s transitions.

Her research examines the post-Yugoslav space through interdisciplinary lenses, including:

• Cultural and social transformations after state dissolution
• Publishing industries as cultural transfer agents
• French scholarly engagement with Eastern Europe
• Contemporary historiography of the Balkans

Her publications (2018-2022) consistently explore post-Yugoslav societal reconfiguration, analyzing publishing ecosystems, collective memory of 1991 geopolitical ruptures, and methodological innovations in Balkan studies. This reflects a sustained focus on transitional societies and knowledge production.
