Professor Anne M. Sickles is a faculty member in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with The Grainger College of Engineering. She holds the rank of Professor since 2023, following roles as Associate Professor (2019-2023) and Assistant Professor (2014-2019). Previously, she was an Associate Physicist (2011-2014) and Assistant Physicist (2009-2014) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Her research focuses on experimental studies of relativistic heavy ion collisions and the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), particularly using the ATLAS experiment at CERN and the sPHENIX detector at RHIC. She leads studies on jet quenching, anisotropic flow, and the properties of QGP at extreme temperatures and densities.
Education: B.S. in Physics from Gonzaga University (2001), Ph.D. in Physics from Stony Brook University (2005), followed by postdoctoral research at Brookhaven National Lab (2005–2009).
Research highlights include pioneering measurements of jet energy loss in QGP, leadership in the ATLAS Heavy Ion Working Group (2018–2020), and contributions to the sPHENIX detector construction. Her work has advanced understanding of QGP dynamics, including fluid-like behavior in small collision systems and jet-medium interactions. She has published extensively in high-impact journals and collaborates internationally with teams like ATLAS and sPHENIX.
Teaching includes courses like PHYS 211 (University Physics: Mechanics), PHYS 212 (Electromagnetism), and special topics seminars. Recognized for teaching excellence in Spring 2015.
