Professor Anne L. Schiller is a distinguished anthropologist at George Mason University, holding the rank of Professor of Anthropology. Her academic roles include former Associate Provost for International Programs and founding Vice President of Mason’s Office of Global Strategies. She also served as Director of the Anthropology Graduate Program and International Studies Program at North Carolina State University, where she earned the Alumni Distinguished Professor title.
Her research focuses on identity, religion, and tourism in Italy and Indonesia. Key works include Small Sacrifices: Religious Change and Cultural Identity Among the Ngaju of Indonesia (1997) and Merchants in the City of Art (2016), analyzing Florentine merchant communities. She conducted fieldwork in Indonesian Borneo and Italy with support from Fulbright, Wenner-Gren, and National Geographic grants.
Her recent projects explore cultural representation in Southern Italy’s Puglia region and expatriate social networks. In 2016, she served as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Italy’s Università del Salento, lecturing on qualitative research methods.
