Dr. Anne J. Goldberg is the Cynthia Cook Sandefur Odyssey Associate Professor of Anthropology and Chair of the Sociology/Anthropology Department at Hendrix College. She holds a B.A. from the College of William and Mary (1991), M.A. and Ph.D. from Arizona State University (1999, 2005). Her research focuses on borderlands dynamics, particularly the U.S.-Mexico border, and the anthropology of education and identity. She applies anthropological methods to archaeological contexts and has contributed to establishing National Heritage Areas in the Southwest through stakeholder collaboration.
Her work bridges education, identity formation, and cultural preservation, often involving applied projects with tribal communities, governments, and NGOs. Goldberg leads experiential learning initiatives like the Odyssey Trip to Chile and Argentina, emphasizing hands-on fieldwork and community engagement. Her publications span topics from Costa Rican oral history to border town transformation and heritage policy.
As department chair, she oversees curricula aligned with learning goals including sociological imagination, cultural literacy, and ethical citizenship. Students in her mentorship participate in undergraduate conferences and pursue social justice-focused projects, reflecting her commitment to applied anthropology and civic engagement.
