Anne Helness is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History of Ideas at the University of Oslo. With a permanent position since 2006, she specializes in early modern intellectual history (Renaissance to Romanticism), focusing on knowledge production through travelogues, historical theory, and postcolonial perspectives.
- PhD in History of Ideas (University of Oslo, 2000)
- Thesis: Laurens van der Post's Understanding of Racism Critiqued Through Postcolonial African Thinkers
Her research explores:
- Knowledge production in early modern travel narratives (1550-1750), particularly African accounts
- Development of anthropological/geographic knowledge and its role in modernity's emergence
- Networks of Renaissance humanists like Giovanni Battista Ramusio
- Transformation of Elizabethan worldviews during the 17th century
Recent publications examine travel knowledge circulation, maritime modernities, and critical metaphors in colonial discourse. She teaches BA courses including:
