Dr. Anne Giblin Gedacht is an Associate Professor of History at Seton Hall University's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of History. Her research focuses on modern Japanese history (1852-1953), emphasizing migration, empire/colonialism, regional identity, and dark tourism. She holds a PhD in Modern Japanese History from the University of Wisconsin (2015), an MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2008), and a BA from the University of Chicago (2003).
Her book Tōhoku Unbounded: Regional Identity and the Mobile Subject in Prewar Japan (2022) examines transnational migration networks. Current projects include From Everywhere and Nowhere: Japanese Expatriate Identities in the Era of Globalization, analyzing nationalism through transnational relocations. She teaches courses such as Global Food History, Age of the Samurai, and Japan’s Pacific Empire, integrating global perspectives.
Dr. Gedacht’s work bridges historical methodologies with modern issues, exploring themes like disaster studies and folklore through transnational lenses. Her recent publications include a chapter on medieval Daoist correlatives in Pokémon Go (2024) and analyses of proletarian literature and Boshin War narratives (2022).
