Dr. Anne Fennell is a Distinguished Professor at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture, and Plant Science, within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. from Iowa State University. Her research focuses on grapevine bud dormancy, cold hardiness, and genomics, with an emphasis on climate adaptation and sustainable production. She teaches courses in fruit crop production, molecular plant physiology, and crop physiology.
Her research interests include the genetic and physiological mechanisms of dormancy regulation, rootstock effects in grafted grapevines, and enological traits. She leads major projects like VitisGen3 and USDA-funded studies, collaborating internationally. Awards include the 2021 Outstanding Researcher Award and 2020 Distinguished Professor title. She advises students through NSF REU programs and chairs key committees in plant science.
Recent work integrates hyperspectral imaging and AI for vine phenotyping, genomic mapping of rootstock-scion interactions, and climate resilience strategies. Her lab, the McFadden Biostress Lab, explores root system architecture and berry trait genetics. Grants include USDA-NIFA and NSF MRI funding for equipment and research initiatives.
