Anne Elizabeth West is the George Barth Geller Distinguished Professor of Neurobiology and Professor of Cell Biology at Duke University, with affiliations at the Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. She earned a B.A. from Cornell University (1989) and M.D./Ph.D. from Harvard University (1998). Her laboratory investigates neuronal activity regulation of synapse formation, brain development, and cognitive dysfunction mechanisms through epigenetic and transcriptional frameworks.
Research focuses on chromatin dynamics, enhancer function, and activity-dependent gene regulation in neural circuits. Key interests include synaptic plasticity, neuronal maturation, epigenetic control of behavior, and neurodevelopmental disorder mechanisms. Recent publications emphasize CRISPR-based epigenome editing, Zic transcription factors, perineuronal nets, and nucleus accumbens plasticity.
Awards include the George Barth Geller Distinguished Professorship. She leads major NIH grants spanning neurodevelopmental disorders, chromatin regulation, and training programs (e.g., Pharmacological Sciences Training Program 2025-2030, Neurobiology Training Program 2024-2029). Her lab at Bryan Research Building utilizes genetic models to dissect transcriptional enhancers and chromatin architecture in neuronal function.
