Dr. Anne-Catrin Uhlemann is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. She is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian / Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where she provides clinical care and conducts research on infectious diseases.
Dr. Uhlemann received her MD from the University of Tubingen, Germany, and a PhD in Molecular Parasitology from the University of London. She completed her residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in 2010. Her academic progression includes serving as Florence Irving Assistant Professor of Medicine (2014-2017) and Paul A. Marks Scholar at Columbia University (2010-2013).
Her research leverages genomic tools to elucidate the molecular mechanisms and evolutionary underpinnings of drug-resistant microorganisms. Dr. Uhlemann directs the Microbiome & Pathogen Genomics Core at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where her laboratory investigates Staphylococcus aureus and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), including how CRE establish colonization in the gut microbiome and progress to cause infections in immunocompromised hosts. Her work spans bacterial evolution, host-pathogen interactions, and genomic mechanisms of resistance development.
Analysis of Dr. Uhlemann's publication history reveals consistent focus on antimicrobial resistance in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, with recent expansion into viral research including SARS-CoV-2 resistance mechanisms. Her work bridges clinical infectious diseases with advanced genomic research, addressing critical questions in pathogen evolution and resistance development.

Dr. Uhlemann is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease, and is an active member of the American Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Society of America. Her clinical expertise includes bacterial infections, organ transplant infections, and staphylococcal infections. She maintains an active laboratory investigating the evolution of bacterial pathogens and their resistance mechanisms, with implications for clinical management of difficult-to-treat infections.
At Columbia University, Dr. Uhlemann directs the Microbiome & Pathogen Genomics Core, which serves as a hub for genomic analysis of pathogens and host microbiomes. Her team combines clinical microbiology with advanced genomic approaches to address pressing questions in antimicrobial resistance, contributing significantly to our understanding of how pathogens evolve resistance and how this knowledge can inform clinical management strategies.
