Professor Anne Castles is an ARC Laureate Professor at the Australian Catholic University (ACU), affiliated with the Faculty of Education and Arts and the Australian Centre for the Advancement of Literacy. Her research focuses on reading acquisition, reading disorders, and the cognitive, linguistic, and genetic factors influencing literacy development. She emphasizes translating research into practical assessments and interventions. Professor Castles has held editorial roles in journals like Scientific Studies of Reading and served as President of Learning Difficulties Australia (2017–18).
Her work explores variability in reading-impaired populations and the mechanisms underlying dyslexia. Key areas include morphological processing, orthographic learning, and the role of oral vocabulary in literacy. She has developed evidence-based tools for evaluating reading and spelling skills.
Professor Castles’ awards include the ARC Laureate Fellowship and Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. Her research spans experimental studies on reading strategies, eye-tracking methodologies, and cross-linguistic comparisons in literacy development.
