Anne Calvès is a Full Professor in the Department of Sociology at Université de Montréal, specializing in African family dynamics and gender relations. She holds a PhD in Rural Sociology and Demography from Pennsylvania State University. Her research examines changing family structures in urban Africa, particularly focusing on youth transitions to adulthood, reproductive health, and gender inequality in employment contexts.
Her primary research investigates the intersections of education, employment, and family formation patterns in West African cities like Ouagadougou and Lomé. She employs longitudinal biographical surveys and statistical transition analysis to study how urbanization affects marital choices, domestic labor division, and women's economic participation. Recent work explores international development policies and their impact on gender empowerment in the Global South.
Professor Calvès has led several major research projects funded by Canadian institutions, including studies on female entrepreneurship in West African cities and post-COVID economic recovery programs for women. She mentors numerous graduate students working on African social issues and has published extensively on demographic transitions in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes.
