Anne Bruneau is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Université de Montréal. She holds dual roles as Director of the Plant Biology Research Institute (IRBV) and Scientific Director of the University of Montreal Biodiversity Centre. Her research focuses on phylogenetic relationships of flowering plants, particularly legumes, integrating molecular and morphological data to inform systematic classification and evolutionary processes. Bruneau has supervised numerous graduate students and leads major biodiversity projects like Canadensys, a national initiative digitizing biological collections.
Education: BSc (McGill, 1982), MSc (UConn, 1986), PhD (Cornell, 1993) in plant systematics, with a postdoc at University of Reading (1995).
Research emphasizes molecular systematics of legumes (especially Caesalpinioideae), floral evolution, biogeography, and polyploidy. Key contributions include reclassification of legume subfamilies and discovering new species named in her honor (Annea genus). Awards include the 2018 Armand-Frappier Prize and 2016 Michel-Jurdant Prize.
Leading projects: Global legume checklist, Quebec biodiversity networks, and spectral analysis for plant identification. Collaborates internationally on biodiversity informatics and conservation efforts through Canadensys, integrating over 4.2 million specimens across institutions.
