Dr. Annabel Ipsen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, University of Oklahoma. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2016). Her research focuses on international development, agri-food systems, gender, political economy, environmental sociology, and qualitative methodologies.
Her work examines how place shapes interactions between local communities and external actors, particularly in contexts of sociopolitical change. Key themes include the political economy of genetically modified crops, gendered labor dynamics in agro-export sectors, and environmental governance challenges like 'sacrifice zones' in meatpacking industries. She has conducted fieldwork across the Americas, including the U.S. Midwest, Hawaii, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.
Dr. Ipsen has contributed to leading journals such as Sociological Perspectives, Law & Society Review, and Environmental Sociology. Her applied research spans over a decade with organizations like Oxfam, the Inter-American Development Bank, and ECLAC. She teaches courses on globalization, labor studies, food systems, research methods, and social movements.
