Dr. Anna Veronika Wendland is an Associated Member and Head of Subproject C01 - Advanced Security (2018-2021) at the Herder Institute. Her research focuses on nuclear technology, environmental history, urban development, and transnational East European studies. She has held roles including Habilitation project leader, research associate, and fellow at institutions like the Imre Kertész Kolleg (Jena) and the University of Leipzig's GWZO. Her work bridges technical, environmental, and socio-political dimensions of modernity.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Cologne (1998) with a dissertation on Ukrainian conservatives in Galicia, followed by habilitation research on nuclear cities and reactor safety. She has coordinated projects like 'Polesia as an Intervention Landscape' and contributed to the SFB-TR 138 'Dynamics of Security.'
Research interests emphasize visual history, nuclear safety communication, and urban histories of Lviv/Vilnius. Her publications analyze nuclear policy debates, Cold War infrastructure, and socio-technical systems in Eastern Europe. Wendland is co-editor of the Journal for Research on East Central Europe and advises organizations like the Heinrich Böll Foundation. She has conducted fieldwork comparing nuclear facilities in Western Germany and Eastern Europe, examining human and organizational factors in safety contexts.
