Anna Törnroos-Remes is an Associate Professor (tenure-track) at Åbo Akademi University's Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, specializing in Environmental and Marine Biology. Her work bridges marine ecology with social science, maritime law, and business through interdisciplinary research initiatives.
- Current projects include EU Horizon 2020's ECOTIP (Arctic biodiversity changes) and 'Human-marine animal relationships' (Kulturfonden 2019)
- Key research areas: trait-based ecosystem analysis, seafloor dynamics, and biodiversity-wellbeing linkages
- Teaching: Global Change Biology, Bachelor thesis projects, and guest lectures nationally/internationally
Her trait-based approach focuses on marine organism characteristics (feeding, reproduction) to predict ecosystem responses to global change. This spans the Baltic Sea and Arctic regions, with applications for conservation and management frameworks. Recent work emphasizes cross-sector collaboration and transdisciplinary knowledge production.
- 2012: Akademikerpriset for PhD contributions
Supervision includes doctoral candidates Phoebe Armitage, Jolanda Linsén, and former student Christina Henseler. Collaborations extend to the Center for Ocean Life (Denmark), EU Horizon 2020 projects, and the Polin Institute for Theological Research.
