Anna Stilz is the Kernan Robson Professor of Political Science at UC Berkeley. Her work focuses on political theory, territorial sovereignty, and climate justice. She authored Liberal Loyalty (2009) and Territorial Sovereignty (2019), exploring state legitimacy, citizenship, and territorial rights. Her current research addresses climate change's impact on the global states-system, migration ethics, and land governance.
Educated at Harvard (PhD, 2005) and the University of Virginia (BA, 1999), she previously taught at Princeton University for 15 years. She serves as founding Editor-in-Chief of Free & Equal: A Journal of Ethics and Public Affairs, and Co-Editor of Political Philosophy for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
Her research integrates classical thinkers like Rousseau and Kant with contemporary issues such as climate displacement, border ethics, and decolonization. She examines how states' territorial claims intersect with global environmental challenges and moral obligations of citizens toward state actions.
