Dr Anna Shadrina is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Liverpool's Department of Sociology, Social Policy, and Criminology. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Birkbeck College, University of London, and previously held a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). Her research focuses on the intersection of ageing, politics, and post-Soviet societies, with particular attention to authoritarianism, nationalism, and non-Western epistemologies. She explores how political actors use age categories to frame the East/West divide and investigates older women's agency in Russia through her work on 'babushka' archetypes.
Dr Shadrina's academic journey began with a BA in Journalism from Belarusian State University and an MA in Sociology from the European Humanities University. She has taught at multiple institutions, including Birkbeck and UCL, and is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy. Her forthcoming book, 'The Babushka Phenomenon: Older Women and the Political Sociology of Ageing in Russia' (UCL Press), examines neoliberalism's impact on ageing populations.
Her research interests span feminist ageing studies, non-imperial futures, and the sociopolitical dimensions of later life. She actively supervises projects addressing East/West divides, post-socialism, and authoritarianism. Key publications include analyses of Belarusian retirees' political mobilization and the socio-cultural roles of older women in Russia.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on Sociology of Health, Sexuality, and Dissertation supervision. Her work bridges critical gerontology with political sociology, offering unique insights into Eastern European contexts.
