Anna Rufas is a European Space Agency Research Fellow and ocean biogeochemist affiliated with Oxford's Biological Oceanography research group. Her work focuses on integrating computational models with satellite and observational data to study the marine carbon cycle, particularly the Biological Carbon Pump (BCP). She currently leads the SLAM-DUNK project (2024–2026), funded by ESA’s Living Planet Fellowship, which explores how climate change impacts carbon transfer efficiency in the ocean. Previously, her PhD (2016–2022) at Oxford under Prof. Samar Khatiwala and Dr. Adrian Martin involved developing stochastic Lagrangian models of marine particles.
Her research also addresses offshore geological CO₂ storage safety through collaboration with Prof. Heather Bouman, focusing on ecological baseline assessments using satellite monitoring. Anna teaches 3rd-year Biological Oceanography tutorials, 4th-year field courses in Bermuda, and contributes to the Oxford Study Abroad Programme (OSAP).
Key achievements include NERC funding via the COMICS project and the Oxford Martin School’s Agile Initiative. Her work bridges Earth observation and biogeochemical modeling to advance subsurface ocean data integration.
