Anna Powell is a Senior Lecturer in Art and Design at the University of Huddersfield, affiliated with the School of Arts and Humanities and the Department of Design and Architecture. She is a member of the Centre for Cultural Ecologies in Art, Design and Architecture and the None in Three Centre for the Global Prevention of Gender-based Violence. Her academic background includes a PhD in History of Art and Museum Studies from the University of Leeds (2012), an MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies (2005), and a BA in English and History of Art (2004). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds certifications in research supervision.
Her research focuses on artwork-audience relationships, creative public engagement methods, and art as play. Notable projects include the ROTOR exhibitions, the Archive of Nothingness (AON), and collaborative work with the None in Three Centre. She has contributed to exhibitions, curated public programs, and published on topics like audience impact in heritage spaces and digital game narratives.
Anna teaches art and design theory across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a focus on modules in graphic design, animation, and digital media. Her work often intersects contemporary art practices with public engagement, emphasizing subversive exhibition techniques and participatory experiences.
Her scientific awards include the Stanley and Audrey Burton Scholarship (PhD) and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Research Supervision. She actively supervises PhD students and has organized conferences such as 'Culture, Community, Creativity' and 'Definitions of Creative Citizenship.'
Anna’s lab affiliations include the None in Three Centre, where she co-leads engagement initiatives, and the Centre for Cultural Ecologies. Her research explores transdisciplinary dialogue, cultural heritage, and the strategic impact of art in public spaces.
