Anna Markovska is an Associate Professor and Deputy Director at the International Policing and Public Protection Research Institute (IPPPRI) at Anglia Ruskin University. She is affiliated with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on criminology topics including organized crime, corruption, justice in transition, and comparative criminal justice with a regional emphasis on Ukraine. She joined ARU in 2005 and has led significant research projects funded by the British Academy, notably studying drug-crime connections among Ukrainian prisoners (2007) and migrant worker-crime interactions across three countries (2010).
Education includes a PhD in Finance from Cass Business School (2004), MPhil in Criminology from the University of Cambridge (1999), and a Sociology Honors degree from Kharkiv State University (1996). She is a member of the European Society of Criminology and contributes to the Safe and Inclusive Communities research theme at ARU.
Her research interests bridge theoretical criminology with applied issues like transnational policing strategies and corruption dynamics. Recent work analyzes eco-crime networks, white-collar crime in Ukraine, and the interplay between political structures and criminal organizations. She has presented at major conferences including the European Society of Criminology Annual Conference (2014, Prague) and organized international colloquia like the 14th Cross-Border Crime Colloquium in Cambridge (2013).
Her advising focuses on money laundering evaluation and anti-corruption legislation. Grants include two British Academy Small Grants totaling over £100k. She collaborates with international researchers on projects examining migrant worker vulnerability, transnational crime patterns, and institutional failures in post-Soviet contexts.
