Anna Linderholm is an Associate Professor and Researcher at Stockholm University's Department of Geological Sciences. She is affiliated with both the Department of Geological Sciences and the Center for Paleogenetics (CPG), a collaboration between Stockholm University and the Swedish Museum of Natural History.
Dr. Linderholm is a member of IGV's Marine Geology group, which studies the geology and history of the oceans through analyses of marine sediment archives and submarine landforms. Her research focuses on the application of ancient DNA as a tool to investigate large-scale human historical events including colonizations, migrations, domestications, and adaptations to environmental changes.
Her current major project, Pioneers of northern Scandinavia, employs a palaeogenomic approach on lake sediments to identify how and when pioneering humans colonized northern Scandinavia. This research aims to establish the chronology and origins of the first human settlements in the region while reconstructing the past environments these early inhabitants experienced. The project's overarching goal is to explain and understand pioneer settlement patterns and adaptive strategies that would otherwise remain unidentified through conventional archaeological methods.
As part of her broader research program, Dr. Linderholm examines how human populations responded to climate change and disease introductions throughout history, using ancient DNA extracted from human and animal remains as well as sediment samples to build comprehensive historical narratives.
