Anna Levett is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature and French at Oberlin College. She holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on Mediterranean studies, global modernism, and the intersection of surrealism with Arab literature and film. She is currently working on a book project examining surrealism’s reception in the Arab world, supported by an ACLS Pauline Yu Fellowship (2022-2023). Levett teaches courses on translation studies, critical theory, postcolonial studies, and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean studies.
Her recent publications include analyses of surrealism’s cultural impact, translations of Palestinian poet Habib Tengour’s work, and explorations of art’s role in revolution and climate activism. She frequently collaborates with students, as seen in her 2023 essay inspired by classroom discussions. Her scholarship bridges literary theory, film studies, and political ethics, with a focus on North Africa and the Francophone world.

Levett’s 2020 article on Abdelwahab Meddeb’s work highlights her engagement with Sufism and modernist political thought. Her translation of Tengour’s poem—a tribute to Mahmoud Darwish—demonstrates her commitment to cross-cultural literary exchange. She has also published reviews on Paul Celan’s writings and the Albert Memmi Reader, reflecting her deep engagement with 20th-century Francophone and North African intellectual history.
