As an applied economist, Dr. Kochanova's research spans several interconnected areas. Her primary focus is on political economy, where she examines how political systems and institutions affect economic outcomes. She has conducted significant research on democratization processes and their economic consequences, particularly in developing countries. In development economics, she investigates the relationship between technology adoption and economic growth, with special attention to information and communication technologies in emerging markets. Her environmental economics work addresses climate change policy and sustainable development challenges. She has published extensively on the economic impact of ICT, examining how digital technologies transform business practices, government services, and market competition.
Her publication record reveals clear research trajectories across multiple domains. The most prominent theme is the intersection of technology and economic development, with numerous papers examining how mobile technologies and e-government initiatives affect business formalization, tax compliance, and market competition. A second major strand focuses on political economy, particularly the relationship between political transitions and economic competition. A third research stream investigates corruption and institutional quality, analyzing how bribery environments affect firm performance and credit access. These research areas demonstrate her interdisciplinary approach that bridges economics, political science, and technology studies.
Dr. Kochanova actively supervises PhD students in several key areas including institutional economics and development, environment and climate change, political participation and trust, corruption studies, international development, economic impact of ICT, and non-cognitive skills development. Her current PhD students include Yuchen Feng, Irum Awan, and Alex Gill.
