Anna Kapambwe Mwaba is an Assistant Professor of Government at Smith College specializing in African politics and international relations, with particular expertise in election observation and democracy promotion in Southern Africa.

Professor Mwaba's research focuses on the role of African international and regional organizations in election observation and democracy promotion across the continent. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Botswana, Ethiopia, Malawi and Zambia, investigating how these organizations function as international election observers and transform democratic processes on the continent. Her work examines expressions of African agency within international frameworks and contributes to understanding how African-led initiatives shape democratic development.
At Smith College, she teaches courses on Africa's place in international relations, African politics, elections and political development. Her office hours for Spring 2025 are Tuesdays from 1-2pm and Fridays from 3-4pm at 10 Prospect Street #106.
Professor Mwaba received her doctorate in political science from the University of Florida in 2018 with concentrations in comparative politics and international relations. Her scholarship appears in Smith ScholarWorks, where her selected publications document her research on political determinants of African organizations' involvement in member state affairs.
