Anna Jarstad is a Professor at the Department of Political Science, Uppsala University, and an affiliated researcher with the Institute for Research on Conflicts of Interest in Sustainable Social Transformation. She leads the international research network Varieties of Peace and is part of UUniCORN (Uppsala University Conflicting Objectives Research Nexus). Her work focuses on peacebuilding and democratization in post-conflict and multi-ethnic societies, with fieldwork in Cyprus, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and South Africa.

Her research examines the interplay between democratic reforms and peacebuilding in societies recovering from civil war, emphasizing power-sharing mechanisms and local-international collaboration. She has led projects like Living in Contested Land (territorial conflicts) and IMPACT (quantitative power-sharing data collection). Current work involves relational peace frameworks in contexts such as Cambodia, Myanmar, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.
Selected publications include the co-edited open-access volume Relational Peace Practices (Manchester University Press, 2023), From War to Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2008), and Global Governance’s special issue on hybrid peacebuilding (2012). She has supervised seven PhD students and co-supervises first-year doctoral candidates with Josefina Eriksson.
Expert engagements include policy forums with USIP, the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School, and Sweden’s EBA reference group for election support evaluation. She has reviewed applications for the Swedish Research Council, South Africa’s National Research Foundation, and Norway’s Research Council.
