Anna Fünfgeld is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Hamburg, focusing on the social dynamics of ecological transformation. She also holds a Mercator Professorship and serves as a GIGA Associate at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Her roles include research at the University of Potsdam (since 2021) and previous positions at the University of Freiburg (2013–2020). She specializes in energy policy, climate policy, and infrastructure studies, with a regional focus on Indonesia/Southeast Asia and Brazil/South America.
Her research integrates neo-Gramscian approaches, critical political economy, and hegemony analysis. Key projects include the DFG-funded 'Institutionalizing Low Carbon Development' and comparative studies on climate obstruction.
