Dr. Anna Chiumento serves as Lecturer in Global Mental Health and Society within the Social Work department at the University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science. She concurrently holds leadership positions as Deputy Director of Research - Ethics and Integrity for SPS and Co-Programme Director for the Global Mental Health and Society MSc programme. Her academic profile bridges empirical research with practical ethics in mental healthcare systems globally.
Her research concentrates on normative dimensions of mental health service delivery, particularly examining ethical tensions between equity principles and everyday clinical practices. Key thematic areas include:
- Empirical bioethics in global mental health contexts
- Impact of forced displacement on mental wellbeing
- Pandemic recovery in mental healthcare systems
- Integration of lived experience in research design
- Cross-cultural methodological challenges in qualitative ethics research
Analysis of her 2018-2025 publications reveals strong methodological consistency in qualitative and empirical ethics approaches, with increasing focus on post-pandemic healthcare ethics (40% of recent outputs) and culturally responsive frameworks for displaced populations (30%). Her work demonstrates growing engagement with policy implementation through WHO and UNHCR collaborations.
Dr. Chiumento actively supervises MSc dissertations in the Global Mental Health programme and accepts PhD candidates focused on mental health ethics. She currently leads two major research initiatives:
- Working with hospital-based staff wellbeing professionals (2024-2025): Addressing moral injury in NHS settings
- Participatory research with Kankuamo people (2022-2024): Developing culturally sensitive mental health services in Colombia
She maintains significant external engagements through the Global Forum on Bioethics in Research (Steering Committee) and as Chair of the Ethics Advisory Board for the ADVANCE project (2022-2028), while collaborating with the Edinburgh Mental Health Network on cross-institutional wellbeing initiatives.
