Anna Alberini is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. She specializes in Environmental Economics, Energy Economics, and Econometrics. Her research focuses on residential energy demand, energy efficiency policies, vehicle fuel economy, and the economics of health and safety. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California San Diego (1992), an M.A. from the same institution (1989), and a B.A. from the University of Venice (1987).
Alberini teaches PhD-level econometrics and an undergraduate course on climate change economics. She supervises graduate and undergraduate research projects, emphasizing empirical analysis of energy policies and consumer behavior. Her work explores how policies like carbon taxes, registration taxes, and subsidies influence energy consumption, vehicle choices, and environmental outcomes. Recent studies include analyses of EV adoption in Washington, D.C., the effects of Georgian energy assistance programs, and CO2 emission pricing in Australia.
She serves on editorial boards for Energy Economics, The Energy Journal, and Energy Policy, and has advised the U.S. EPA and Energy Information Administration. Her research highlights behavioral responses to energy prices, free-riding in incentive programs, and the valuation of health risks from chemical exposure. Key themes include policy effectiveness, equity, and cross-national comparisons of energy market dynamics.
