Dr. Anna Aguilera is a Professor and Director of the Honors Program in the Department of Biology at Simmons University. She holds a PhD in Environmental Biology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, an MS in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from UMass Amherst, and an AB in Biology from Brown University. Her research focuses on plant ecology, particularly invasive species mechanisms, plant-pollinator dynamics using eDNA techniques, and the effects of PFAS chemicals on plant development. She teaches courses including Environmental Science, General Biology, Evolutionary Biology, and Plant Biology.
Dr. Aguilera’s research lab actively investigates ecological contexts of plant invasions, decomposition processes across ecosystems, and plant-soil feedbacks. She was recognized with the 2023 Simmons Faculty Research Award for her contributions to ecological science and education. Her pedagogical innovations include active learning strategies to enhance student engagement in biology courses. Current projects emphasize community ecology, ecotoxicology, and translational research connecting fieldwork to classroom teaching.
- Expertise: Invasive species biology, plant-pollinator interactions, ecotoxicology, ecological modeling
- Teaching: 9 undergraduate/graduate courses focusing on biology fundamentals and environmental sustainability
- Awards: 2023 Simmons University Faculty Research Award
Her work bridges field research with classroom practice, mentoring students through the Honors Program and internships. Collaborations include studies on non-profit sustainability (ENVI 200) and community-based ecological monitoring projects.
