Ann MacPhail is a Professor in the Department of Physical Education & Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick (UL), holding roles such as Associate Vice President of the Doctoral College and Co-Director of the Physical Education, Physical Activity, and Youth Sport (PEPAYS) Ireland Research Centre. She previously served as Head of Department (2012–2017) and Assistant Dean Research (2019–2023).
Education: B.Ed (First Class Honours) from Heriot Watt University (1992) and Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow (2001). Prior to UL, she was a Research Associate at Loughborough University (2000–2002).
Research focuses on doctoral candidate experiences, physical education teacher education, curriculum alignment, and youth sport. She leads the UNESCO Chair in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy for Sustainable Development (2024–), collaborating with institutions globally. Awards include the AIESEP Lifetime Achievement Fellowship (2015), BERA Scholar Lecture (2016), and an Honorary Doctorate from Sweden (2024).
Teaching interests include physical education pedagogy, curriculum development, and assessment in schools. She has supervised 20 PhD and 6 Master’s completions, with 5 current PhD students. Active in academic communities, she is Associate Editor of Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy and a member of organizations like AIESEP.
