Ann M. Ishimaru is a Professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, Leadership & Policy at the University of Washington’s College of Education. She holds roles as Faculty Research Director of the Leadership for Learning (L4L) EdD program and Director of the Just Educational Leadership Institute. Her work focuses on educational justice, particularly addressing systemic inequities through collective leadership involving youth, families, and educators from marginalized communities. She emphasizes cross-racial solidarity and community-driven solutions in educational systems.
Dr. Ishimaru earned an EdD and EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and an MA from Stanford University. Her research explores equity leadership, family-school partnerships, and policy reforms. She leads major projects like the Lead for Equity Project and Partnering for Racial Equity (PRE), collaborating with Seattle Public Schools to co-design equitable practices.
Her research interests include racial justice, educational leadership, and community-based inquiry. Recent publications highlight equity director challenges, transformative agency in family engagement, and institutional logics in education systems. She has authored books such as *Just Schools: Building Equitable Collaborations with Families & Communities* (2020) and an upcoming volume on equity leadership (2025).
Awarded the UCEA William J. Davis Award (2022) and AERA distinctions, her work bridges academia and practice. She teaches courses on race, equity leadership, and critical perspectives in education. Current initiatives focus on dismantling racial inequities through participatory research and systems change.
