Ann Hellström

Ann Hellström is a Clinical Professor and Chief Physician at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy, specializing in Pediatric Ophthalmology. Her research focuses on improving developmental outcomes for extremely preterm infants through investigations of growth factors, blood composition, and organ maturation.

Her primary research areas include:

• Abnormal retinal vessel development linked to IGF-1 deficiency in preemies
• Supplementation of growth factors for lung, brain, and eye development
• Umbilical cord blood transfusions as alternatives to adult donor blood
• Neural/vascular development impacts of blood platelets and fatty acids

Professor Hellström received the Wallenberg Clinical Scholar grant in 2019, securing SEK 15 million for five years (extendable to ten) to advance her work. She leads a research group collaborating with institutions in Gothenburg, Lund, Stockholm, and Boston on multicenter studies involving micromethods for blood analysis and developmental interventions.
