She works as a teacher educator in the alternative teacher education programme, with a particular focus on tailor-made programmes for second-career teachers.
Dr. Tigchelaar's research interests center around:
- Pedagogy of Teacher Education
- Practice Research
- Second-Career Teachers
- Realistic Pedagogy for School-Based Teacher Education
- Integration of Theory and Practice in Teacher Training
Her work primarily examines how to effectively educate teachers who are entering the profession later in life, drawing on their previous professional experiences. She has developed training programs for teacher educators, particularly school mentors, and has been involved in developing realistic pedagogy approaches for school-based teacher education programs. Her research shows how second-career teachers' prior experiences shape their pedagogical approaches and how teacher education can be tailored to leverage these experiences.
Dr. Tigchelaar initiated and developed the alternative teacher education programme at Utrecht University in 2000. Her publications over the past two decades demonstrate a consistent focus on second-career teachers, teacher education pedagogy, and learning from practice. Her work spans theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and empirical studies on how teachers develop their professional identity and practices.
Dr. Tigchelaar has collaborated extensively with colleagues including Fred Korthagen, Jos Vermunt, and others on various research projects related to teacher education. She has also been involved in international projects such as the Comenius project aimed at integrating practice and theory in teacher education.
Outside her primary academic role, Dr. Tigchelaar works as a freelancer at the Augustinian Institute in Eindhoven, translating Augustine's Ennarationes, and serves on the Client Council of the De Hoogstraat rehabilitation center.
