Prof. Dr. Anke Hinney is a molecular geneticist at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychosomatics, Medical Faculty, University of Duisburg-Essen, and a member of the Essen College for Gender Research (EKfG) since 2015. She holds a W2 Professorship in Molecular Genetics of Obesity and Eating Disorders, first appointed in 2012 and extended through 2021 via EKfG and university funding.
Research Focus: Her work bridges molecular genetics and gender-specific analysis in weight regulation extremes (anorexia nervosa and obesity). Key themes include:
- Genetic variants linked to weight control
- Epigenetic effects in eating disorders
- Gender-sensitive medical research
- Collaborations across disciplines (e.g., engineering)
- Integration of gender perspectives in medical curricula
Notable Contributions: She co-developed the elective course GenderMedizin and leads the DFG-funded Clinician Scientist Programme (UMEA). Her research has been published in top journals like Nature Genetics and Best Practice & Research in Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Gender Research Impact: The EKfG collaboration reshaped her research to prioritize gender-specific analyses, revealing sex-differential genetic effects in anorexia and obesity. This work has influenced institutional strategies for diversity in medical education.
