Anja Arnhold is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta (since 2016). She holds a PhD from Goethe-University Frankfurt (2013) and an MA from the University of Potsdam (2007), both under supervision of Caroline Féry. Her research focuses on experimental phonology, prosody, and information structure, with special emphasis on prosodic typology across languages like Finnish, Inuit, Mandarin, and Kalaallisut. She directs the Prosody Lab at the University of Alberta, equipped with advanced recording facilities and analysis tools.
Her research projects include SSHRC-funded studies on prosody of new vs. shared information in Canadian English and linguistic complexity in marking information structure across languages. She has received the 2025 Faculty of Arts Excellence in Graduate Teaching and Mentorship Award, and serves on the advisory board of Phonological Data & Analysis. She teaches courses such as Phonological Theory, Prosody, and Phonetics at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Key research contributions include work on prosodic focus marking in multiple languages, typological studies of stress systems (e.g., Plains Cree), and the interplay between syntax and prosody in marking information structure. Her lab investigates production and perception of prosodic features using acoustic analysis and experimental methods.
