Dr. Anilkumar Pillai is a Professor and holds the Louis A. Faillace, MD Chair in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). He serves as Director of the Pathophysiology of Neuropsychiatric Disorders Program, Director of the Research Track Residency Program, and Associate Program Director of the General Psychiatry Residency Program.
Dr. Pillai is a translational neuroscience researcher with a longstanding research program focused on understanding the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders to develop novel treatment strategies. His research spans multiple areas including:
- Depression and suicide
- Schizophrenia
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Chronic stress and inflammation
- Neurotrophins in psychiatric disorders
- Mitochondrial function in neuropsychiatric conditions
- Gut-brain axis interactions
Analysis of Dr. Pillai's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of neuroscience, immunology, and psychiatry. His work explores mechanisms such as the gut-brain axis in cognitive decline, complement system activation in depression, mitochondrial disruptions in schizophrenia, and potential therapeutic targets including antioxidants and cannabidiol. This multidisciplinary approach reflects the complexity of neuropsychiatric disorders and the need for innovative treatment strategies that address multiple biological pathways.
Dr. Pillai's scientific achievements include:
- Elected member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology
- Recipient of over 15 federal and non-federal grants, including current NIH and Department of Veteran Affairs funding
- Author/co-author of more than 75 peer-reviewed publications
- Service on NIH study sections and journal editorial boards
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Pillai has an extensive record of training graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty. His leadership in the Research Track Residency Program demonstrates his commitment to developing the next generation of physician-scientists in psychiatry. The Pathophysiology of Neuropsychiatric Disorders Program he directs serves as a hub for innovative research that bridges basic science discoveries with clinical applications, focusing on identifying biological mechanisms that can be targeted for novel treatments.
