Anil Gupta is the Alan Ross Anderson Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pittsburgh, where he is also Professor of History and Philosophy of Science and a Fellow of the Center for Philosophy of Science. He has been a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy since 2001, following academic appointments at Indiana University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and McGill University.
His primary research lies in logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics, and epistemology. Gupta is especially known for his work on truth, meaning, definitions, and perception. He co-developed the Revision Theory of Truth with Nuel Belnap, a seminal contribution to the study of semantic paradoxes and circular definitions. His research integrates formal logic with deep philosophical inquiry into the nature of experience and knowledge.
The recent trajectory of his publications, from Empiricism and Experience (2006) to Conscious Experience: A Logical Inquiry (2019), reveals a consistent focus on grounding philosophical concepts in logical and experiential analysis. His work spans formal semantics, truth theories, and the epistemology of perception, often bridging analytic philosophy with cognitive and linguistic insights.
His scientific honors include:
- Fellow, American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- NEH and ACLS Fellowships
- Fellow, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford (1998–1999)
- Fellow, Fund for the Advancement of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (2022)
- Invited lecturer at major venues: Simon Lectures (Toronto, 2007), Whitehead Lectures (Harvard, 2012), Nelson Philosopher-in-Residence (Michigan, 2010)
Gupta has served as editor of Philosophy and Phenomenological Research and has mentored numerous graduate students (though specific names are not listed). He has received significant research support through national fellowships and institutional affiliations. His work continues to influence both logic and core areas of analytic philosophy.
He is affiliated with several interdisciplinary units, including the Center for Philosophy of Science, the Department of History, and the World History Center. These affiliations reflect his broad intellectual reach across philosophy, science, and historical thought.
