Ania Busza, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in multiple departments at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), including Neurology (Stroke Division), Neuroscience, Neurosurgery, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. She specializes in stroke recovery mechanisms, neurorehabilitation, and precision medicine approaches. Her research lab, the Movement and Plasticity Lab (MAPL), focuses on identifying early biomarkers for chronic motor impairments post-stroke and developing innovative therapies using technologies like virtual reality. Dr. Busza has received awards for teaching excellence, including the 2023 A.B. Baker Teacher Recognition Award and the 2022 Neurology Faculty Teaching Award.
She earned her undergraduate degrees in Biology and Brain & Cognitive Sciences from MIT, followed by M.D. and Ph.D. training at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Her doctoral research explored circadian rhythms and temperature signaling. Clinical training includes neurology residency at Boston Medical Center and a vascular neurology fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Dr. Busza’s research integrates clinical, genetic, and technological approaches to improve stroke rehabilitation. Her recent work includes the STRONG Study (genetic influences on recovery) and the FLUORESCE trial (fluoxetine for vision recovery). She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across departments such as the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience and the Neurobiology & Anatomy Ph.D. Program.
