Angus C. Wilson, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and serves as Assistant Dean for Research Laboratory Operations and Facilities. He is the Principal Investigator of the Wilson Lab, which focuses on understanding the molecular controls and pathogenic consequences of herpesvirus latency.
Dr. Wilson's research interests include:
- Virology, particularly herpesviruses
- Viral latency and reactivation mechanisms
- Gene expression regulation during viral infection
- Innate immune defenses against viruses
- Chromatin regulation of viral genomes
- Molecular biology of viral transcription
Dr. Wilson's laboratory investigates how herpesviruses regulate the transition between productive (lytic) replication and a state of long-term persistence known as latency. The lab employs cultured neuron models to study herpes simplex virus latency and reactivation, as well as research on Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus. Recent work has focused on understanding the roles of viral transcription factors like VP16 and RTA, as well as cellular cofactors such as HCF-1 and CSL, in controlling the latent-lytic switch.
Dr. Wilson's laboratory team includes postdoctoral fellow Xiangmei Xi, PhD (co-mentored with Ian J. Mohr, PhD), graduate student Ju Youn Kim, and master's student Michael O'Brien. The lab maintains active collaborations with other researchers at NYU, particularly with Ian J. Mohr in the Department of Microbiology and Moses V. Chao in the Departments of Cell Biology, Neuroscience and Physiology, and Psychiatry.
Dr. Wilson has made significant contributions to understanding herpesvirus biology, with publications in high-impact journals including Cell Reports, mSystems, Journal of Virology, and PLoS Pathogens. His recent work has focused on RNA modification factors in viral replication, transcriptome architectures using nanopore sequencing, and the molecular mechanisms of viral latency and reactivation.
