Angelo Madsen Minax

Angelo Madsen Minax is a multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and Associate Professor of Time-Based Media at the University of Vermont. An alum of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 2005), Minax creates works that explore queer and trans desire, chosen and biological kinships, landscape, and the cosmos through essays, rituals, and intimate exchanges drawing on DIY, punk, and activist communities.

Minax's research interests center on how human relationships are woven through personal and collective histories, cultures, and kinships with specific attention to subcultural experience, phenomenology, and the politics of desire. His approach has been described as an 'alter-cinema of kink, kin, and kind.' His films often blend personal narrative with broader social commentary, creating emotionally and conceptually rich works that challenge conventional storytelling.

His filmography demonstrates a consistent exploration of transgender experience, alternative kinship structures, and the intersections of personal identity with broader cultural narratives. Minax's work shows increasing technical sophistication while maintaining raw emotional authenticity, moving from early DIY videoworks to critically acclaimed feature-length documentaries that have screened at major international festivals.
