She is a challenge-led researcher working at the intersection of feminist theory, human-computer interaction (HCI), and social justice. Her work focuses on co-designing digital technologies and services with communities facing systemic disadvantage, particularly women and sex workers, to reimagine systems of care and harm reduction. She co-founded the Design Feminisms Research Group and the Gendered Violence and Abuse Interdisciplinary Research Theme, fostering collaborations across disciplinary divides.
- Education: PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Newcastle University (2019)
- Previous Roles: Research Officer at Swansea University (2018–2019), PhD Student at Newcastle University (2015–2019)
Her research emphasizes collaborative craft and creative practice, using textile-based methods to amplify lived experiences in digital design. Recent publications explore topics like algorithmic accountability, feminist HCI, and safety technologies for gendered violence prevention. She has secured funding from organizations including the British Academy, EPSRC, and the Lloyds Bank Foundation.
Current trends in her work include:
- Developing feminist care ethics toolkits for community-based design
- Addressing toxicity in algorithmic content moderation
- Materializing data through tactile and participatory frameworks
- Centering safety in pervasive computing systems
- Advancing justice-oriented ecologies in digital technologies
Dr. Strohmayer’s scientific contributions have been recognized with the Feminist Care Ethics Toolkit for Community-Based Design award (2025). She actively supervises PhD students and collaborates with networks like Revival Newcastle and Transforming Together to improve services for marginalized populations.
