Angelika Nußberger is a Full Professor at the University of Cologne, holding the Chair of Constitutional Law, International Law and Comparative Law. She serves as founding Director of the Academy of European Human Rights Protection and director of the Institute for Eastern European Law and Comparative Law. Her distinguished career includes roles as International Judge at the Constitutional Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Vice President of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, and former Vice-President of the European Court of Human Rights (2011-2019).
- Education: Studied Slavic studies, modern German/French literature, and law at Munich and Würzburg universities; visiting researcher at Harvard Law School (1994-1995); study visit to Moscow (1985)
Her research focuses on international and European human rights protection, comparative constitutional law (particularly Eastern Europe), general international law with emphasis on regional differences, and constitutional law addressing rule of law and democracy. Her recent publications analyze ECHR constitutionalization, judicial decision-making mechanics, and the interplay between hard/soft law sources in ECtHR jurisprudence.
Scientific awards include multiple honorary doctorates (Tbilissi, Ukraine, Romania), the Arthur-Burkhardt Prize (2019), and the Max-Friedländer-Prize (2021). She is part of numerous academic institutions including the International Academy of Comparative Law and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences.
