Angelika Dummermuth

Dr. Angelika Dummermuth serves as Science Manager at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), where she coordinates the Marine Stations Helgoland and Sylt. With over two decades of experience, she manages critical coastal research infrastructure in the German Bight region of the North Sea, supporting ecological time series monitoring and international research collaboration. Her role bridges scientific expertise with research infrastructure management, ensuring these facilities serve as hubs for national and international scientists.

Dummermuth earned her Diploma in Biology from Universität Bremen (1991-1998), followed by a PhD (1999-2003). Her educational background established the foundation for her research on marine macroalgae ecophysiology and oxidative stress responses. Fluent in German, English, and French, she leverages these language skills in international scientific collaboration and communication.

Her research interests focus on ecophysiology of marine macroalgae, particularly their responses to environmental stressors like UV radiation, salinity changes, and oxidative stress. She has made significant contributions to understanding antioxidative mechanisms in Arctic and Antarctic algae, with applications for climate change research. Her expertise extends to science management and communication, supporting the operational framework for marine research infrastructure.

Dummermuth's publication record spans two decades, with recent work emphasizing coastal station operations, climate change impacts on sedimentary coasts, and shipboard training programs. Her research demonstrates strong interdisciplinary connections between molecular biology, ecology, and climate science, with practical applications for coastal management and monitoring in the face of environmental change.

As coordinator of the Marine Stations Helgoland and Sylt, Dummermuth oversees critical infrastructure including 24 seawater mesocosms for climate scenario studies, research vessels Mya II, Uthörn and Aade, and the AWI Centre for Scientific Diving. These stations serve as centers for university education, guest research, and public outreach through facilities like BLUEHOUSE and Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten, contributing significantly to marine science capacity building.
