Dr Angela Salim is a Research Fellow at the University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB). Her research focuses on natural products chemistry, microbial biodiscovery, and the discovery of novel antibiotics and anthelmintics. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Western Sydney and a PhD from The University of Queensland.
Salim's work emphasizes the exploration of Australian microbes, particularly soil- and marine-derived organisms, to identify bioactive compounds with applications in veterinary and human health. Her research integrates cultivation profiling, molecular networking, and synthetic chemistry to uncover new chemical entities. Key areas include anthelmintic discovery for heartworm treatment, antibacterial agents against drug-resistant pathogens, and natural product-based therapies for inflammatory diseases.
She leads and co-supervises multiple PhD and Master's students, contributing to projects such as microbial biodiscovery, molecular networking applications, and antibiotic development. Current funding includes a Cooperative Research Centre grant for marine-derived antiparasitic research (2022–2026).
Salim collaborates with experts like Prof. Robert Capon and Dr. Zeinab Khalil, advancing interdisciplinary projects in drug discovery and chemical biology. Her lab is part of the IMB’s broader efforts to leverage Australia’s unique biodiversity for biomedical innovation.
