Angela Roothaan is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Philosophy of Culture, Politics, and Organization. She holds a PhD from Universiteit van Amsterdam (1996) and degrees from Universiteit Leiden (Master: 1987, Bachelor: 1987). Her research focuses on African and Intercultural Philosophy, postcolonial theory, and spirit ontologies.
- Teaches Social and Political Philosophy (Master) and Intercultural Philosophy (Bachelor).
- Coordinates the VU Graduate Winter Course on Intercultural Philosophy and Postcolonial Theory since 2020.
- Leads the The Bantu Philosophy Project (2019–2027), exploring African philosophical frameworks.
Her work bridges academic philosophy with public engagement through blogs, social media, and lectures. Notable awards include the Choice Outstanding Academic Title (2023) and CLUE+ Grant (2022).
Active in PhD supervision across African Philosophy, Continental Philosophy, and Race Theory. Has reviewed over 195 academic activities including thesis examinations and editorial work.
