Angela Reyes is Professor in the Department of English at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), and Doctoral Faculty in Anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center. She teaches courses on English linguistic structures, discourse theory, and linguistic anthropology. She serves on the Faculty Advisory Board of the Asian American Studies Program and Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program at Hunter College.
Education: PhD in History, University of Pennsylvania, 2003.
Research Interests: Reyes specializes in semiotics, racialization, and coloniality, examining historical and contemporary language formations in the U.S. and Philippines. Her ethnographic work includes studies of Southeast Asian American youth, Korean American students, and Filipino academic communities, focusing on mixed-race identities, elite linguistic registers, and colonial legacies in social media.
Publications: Her research spans linguistic anthropology, discourse analysis, and race studies, with recent work exploring postcolonial semiotics, colonial photography, and skin-lightening practices. Her publications demonstrate interdisciplinary approaches to language, identity, and power dynamics.
