Dr. Angela Luna Hernandez is a Lecturer in the Department of Social Statistics & Demography at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) and its Methodological Innovation: Survey Methods and Official Statistics research group. She specializes in small area estimation, poverty measurement, and demographic analysis, particularly focusing on fertility trends and education impacts in Latin America, Mexico, and West Africa. Her work integrates geospatial data and innovative survey methodologies to address socioeconomic challenges. Dr. Hernandez has contributed to major projects funded by the ESRC and the European Union, including the SPF ‘UK Population Laboratory’ scoping project and the InGRID2 initiative. She currently supervises PhD student Luciano Perfetti Villa in Social Statistics & Demography.
Key research themes include adolescent fertility dynamics, poverty measurement through multisource data, and methodological advancements in official statistics. Her recent studies explore long-term fertility changes in Mexico and Latin America, while others apply geospatial techniques to assess poverty in West Africa. She also investigates how emerging technologies can enhance extreme poverty measurement. Dr. Hernandez has authored/co-authored peer-reviewed articles in journals like Population and Development Review and Journal of Official Statistics, as well as reports for international research consortia.
