PD Dr. Angela Lammert is a distinguished art historian and Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Art and Visual History at Humboldt University of Berlin. With a career spanning over three decades, she has established herself as a leading scholar in modern and contemporary art, particularly focusing on German, French, American, and Brazilian art from the 19th to 21st centuries. Her academic journey began at Humboldt University where she studied art history, classical archaeology, and cultural theory from 1982-1988. She earned her doctorate in 1993 on "Antimodernism and Modernism in Sculpture at the Weimar Academy" and completed her Habilitation in 2013 on "Bildung und Bildlichkeit von Notation. Von der frühen Wissenschaftsfotografie zu den Künsten des 20. Jahrhunderts" (Education and Imagery of Notation. From Early Scientific Photography to the Arts of the 20th Century). Since 2008, she has served as Scientific Director of Interdisciplinary Special Projects of the Visual Arts Section of the Academy of Arts, Berlin.
Dr. Lammert's research centers on the History and Theory of Modernity, Photography, Sculpture, Space and notation theory, and the intersection of Art and Science. Her extensive publications demonstrate deep engagement with visual representation, material culture, and the theoretical frameworks that shape artistic production. She has curated numerous exhibitions including "John Heartfield. Fotografie plus Dynamit" (2020), "Underground and Improvisation. Alternative Music and Art since 1968" (2018), and "Dieter Appelt. Vortex. For Marguerite Duras" (2018). Her scholarly work spans multiple institutions, with teaching appointments at Humboldt University, Free University, University of the Arts, and Berlin-Weißensee Art College since 2004, and a guest professorship at Berlin-Weißensee Art College in 2009/2010.
Her recent publications reveal a sophisticated analysis of visual culture, particularly examining the relationship between notation systems, spatial representation, and artistic production. The recurring themes across her work include the materiality of artistic processes, the theoretical frameworks of visual representation, and the historical contexts of artistic production. Her scholarship demonstrates exceptional breadth, moving fluidly between photography, sculpture, architecture, and interdisciplinary approaches to visual culture.
Dr. Lammert is an active participant in the international academic community, regularly presenting at conferences and symposia worldwide. She has collaborated with major institutions including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, and various German academic and cultural organizations. Her work bridges historical scholarship with contemporary theoretical frameworks, making significant contributions to our understanding of modern and contemporary visual culture.
As liaison lecturer of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Berlin since 1998 and scientific director at the Academy of Arts since 2008, she has shaped important intellectual dialogues in German cultural institutions. Her curatorial work, particularly on John Heartfield and underground art movements, demonstrates her commitment to exploring the political dimensions of visual culture and the ways artistic practices respond to historical circumstances.
