Angela LaScala-Gruenewald is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the City University of New York (2025).
Her research explores the intersection of punishment, law, and political economy, with emphasis on:
- Everyday operations of criminal justice institutions (police, prisons, courts)
- How bureaucratic practices shape race and class inequalities
- Organizational mechanisms governing resource distribution and authority
- Systemic challenges in mass incarceration and decarceral policies
