Angela Esterhammer is a Professor of English Literature at the University of Zurich. She is also an Associate Faculty member at the Centre for Comparative Literature and the Department of German at the University of Toronto, and an Affiliate Faculty member in the Collaborative Specialization in Book History and Print Culture. Her work bridges British, German, and European Romanticism, emphasizing performativity, improvisation, and media experimentation.

Her research explores Romanticism through interdisciplinary lenses, including verbal performativity, improvisational poetry, and print culture. Notable works include Creating States (1994), The Romantic Performative (2000), and Print and Performance in the 1820s (2020).
Recent publications focus on speculative fiction, identity construction, and transnational literary exchanges in the 1820s. Her The Improvisation of Poetry, 1750-1850 database maps improvisational traditions across Europe.
